Why is it important?
Here in Portage County:
- Last year 27% of calls to United Way's 2-1-1 requested help with basic needs.
- 93% increase in number of food requests to Health and Human Services between 2001 and 2006
- 78% increase in number of diaper requests between 2001 and 2006
- 65% increase in number of clothing requests between 2001 and 2006
- 43% increase in number of individuals housed at the Salvation Army since 2000
Increase overall health of uninsured and/or underinsured individuals in Portage County.
Why is it important?
Children with health coverage are better prepared to learn in school and succeed in life.The uninsured are less likely to access preventive care or seek early treatment of illness and therefore may miss more time at work or school. Untreated mental health problems are a dimension of homelessness, academic achievement and independence.
Here in Portage County:
- CAP Services estimates an additional 4,000 individuals are eligible for BadgercarePlus
- Health & Human Services reports an 85% increase medical requests between 2001 and 2006
- Ministry Dental Center's waiting list is over 2,000 individuals long with 600 of these from Portage County
